Doris Jean (Welch) Hilton Smith, 88, of Pawhuska, OK went to be with her Heavenly Father on December 26, 2021. Doris was born on October 7, 1933, in Pawhuska. In the 1940s, her family moved to Delaware, OK and ran the telephone company. She lived in the Bartlesville, OK area until she was in the 6th grade when the family moved back to Pawhuska. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
After Doris and Carl were married, they lived in the Vet Village in Pawhuska for a few years before moving the family to Liberal, KS. While in Liberal, Doris began her career with Safeway. The family returned to Pawhuska after living in Liberal for 4 years. After returning to Pawhuska, Doris worked at the carpet mill, before continuing her career with Safeway until retirement. She enjoyed working with so many friends at Safeway, before retiring. Everyone knew her by her red hair. She also worked at Rexall Drug where she enjoyed the customers. For 13 years, Doris and family had firework stands in front of Welch and Son Salvage, a family owned and operated business. She enjoyed big family gatherings at Christmas where everyone would play bingo. Doris was kind, compassionate and cherished her family. She was especially fond of her nieces, nephews, cousins and sister-in-law Vivian Welch.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Vida J. and Floyd W. Welch, her husband Carl Ray Hilton, Sr. (1986), son Allen Hilton, grandchildren David Thompson and Carla Hilton, sister Sue Thompson and brother Charles Welch. As well as, her maternal grandparents Nellie and David Givens. Later in life, she married Delbert Smith, who preceded her in death in 2019. They truly enjoyed each other for ten years, along with stepdaughters Bonnie Williams and Ronda Quinton (Ed).
Doris is survived by two sons Carl Ray Hilton Jr. and Bradley E. Hilton, two daughters Nina Jo Smith (Brad) and Kay Mayes (John), 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at Pawhuska Cemetery on January 8, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. The family appreciates the care and concern Doris received from the outstanding staff at Pawhuska Hospital. Donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 620 E 15th, Pawhuska, OK 74056, in Doris’ name.
